Shirley Davis & The Silverbacks
June 22|8:00 pm-11:00 pm
Considered the new diva of European soul, Shirley Davis’s story is certainly unique. Born in London to Jamaican parents, she lived in the shadow of Wembley Stadium and its concerts. At 16, she married an Australian and spent almost her entire adult life there, where she joined the band Grand WaZoo. With this band, she became a backing vocalist for Wilson Pickett, while the band served as the soul star’s backing band.
She maintained a close friendship with the great Marva Withney, which led her to record a single with the spectacular Japanese band Osaka Monaurail. She has collaborated on several other albums for various record labels, most notably the dance single “I Want to Live” by Deepface, which reached number 1 on the Australian charts.
Shortly after, she returned to Europe, determined to become one of Europe’s leading soul singers. Mentored by Sharon Jones, Shirley captivated the people at TucXone Records at a concert in Madrid, where she performed with the soul diva. They contacted her with a new project: recording an album with The Silverbacks in the old-school style, like those on the legendary Stax Records.
This project has taken shape and become the success that a voice like Shirley’s deserved. Two albums already under her belt, excellent reviews, and a continuous tour throughout Europe are testament to the project’s quality.
