THE SEED OF SON
film
Santiago Auserón has been imbued with the rhythmic wisdom of son since his first visit to Cuba in 1984, during Radio Futura’s first vacation. This influence is transferred to his chamber music as a hybrid innovation in rock.
His project, Juan Perro, is his sound laboratory, and in it he synthesizes Cuba, Spain and New Orleans. A journey that starts from Spanish tradition and flies to the Mississippi Delta in the form of blues, with an intermediate stop in Cuban son, to finally fuse it with New Orleans jazz. A sound road movie that takes us into the universe of one of the most charismatic figures of Spanish postmodern culture.
No, Santiago Auserón has not sold his soul to the devil to obtain an immeasurable musical skill, as legend has it that the ‘bluesman’ Robert Johnson did at a crossroads. Auserón’s case is more prosaic: his natural talent allows him to enter, without the backpack of the devil, the dusty paths of the blues, the sunny routes of the Caribbean and the embers of the patriotic song that received the black influence. Auserón is a happy anomaly in a universe of Christmas stars; a rocker who gave meaning to the modern music of Spain, he is situated, like Johnson, at a crossroads, yes, but there is no demonic pact but a starting point where the echoes of blackness converge.
