Recorded, mixed, and produced by Luis Fuente himself at Lujosa Studios in Gijón, Rocky Road was captured in just two live sessions and released on vinyl. It’s an honest, organic, and unembellished work that, in addition to featuring an exquisite selection of tracks, pays tribute, through every groove, to the legacy of legendary recordings from the 1960s and 70s. From the flawless rhythmic foundation laid down by Antonio Pax and Marino Orejana, to the outstanding brass section work from David Amores and Boris Abreu, the band journeys through the effervescent Cool Jazz of I’m a Born World Shaker, the Soul- and Gospel-infused crooner excellence of Juanma Montero on Rocky Road, and lands on the most refined R&B with Don’t Let Go, a heartfelt homage to American singer Jimmy Witherspoon. Rocky Road is a true catalog of styles and trends, crafted with great skill and an unmistakable festive, vibrant spirit. In their instrumental organ trio line-up, the band closes Side A of the record by reviving the Boogaloo spirit of the legendary Brother Jack McDuff on I Can’t Get Satisfied I, and opens Side B with the second part, I Can’t Get Satisfied II, under the direction of Luis Fuente, one of the finest guitarists on the current scene. Guayaberas Negras showcase their remarkable versatility, reshaping the most refined Blues spirit through renditions of songs such as exquisite Cherry Red and the timeless classic by T-Bone Walker, Waiting for Your Call, before bringing the album to an end with I’m a Born World Shaker instrumental version.
Rocky Road embraces the legacy of those vintage rhythms, the ones that echo in dimly lit rooms, elegant and full of life, with the unmistakable club scene flavor. Today, Guayaberas Negras look back and retrace the path of that music, that timeless echo created just for the purpose of celebration.
