Maite Larburu and Josh Cheatham are the only inhabitants
in this neighbourhood. Larburu is Basque, and Cheatham is American, but they
both live in Amsterdam. Their music studies took them to the Netherlands over a
decade ago –Larburu is a violin player and Cheatham plays the viola da gamba
and double bass–, and they went on to pursue their careers in numerous early
music groups, baroque music orchestras and chamber music. Larburu has been a
member of De Nederlandse Bachvereniging, the
Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Anima Eterna, Capriccio Stravagante and the Holland
Baroque Society. She can be seen with the Holland Baroque Society in the short
film Zela Trovke by Asier Altuna and premièred
at the most recent Donostia-San Sebastian International Film Festival; in it she
performs an 11th century Slovakian song. Cheatham’s curriculum includes the
Capriccio Stravagante Orchestra, the Nederlandse
Bachvereniging, the Concerto Copenhagen, the Chanticleer for Teldec and
many others.

The
music heard in this neighbourhood is completely different. The two musicians
have put their professional instruments
on one side (although not completely) and are offering us a collection of songs
based almost exclusively on Larburu’s convincing, approachable voice and Cheatham’s
arpeggiated guitar sound. What we have here is popular singer-songwriter
material that feeds off folk, blues, Brazilian music, jazz and traditional
song. Larburu wrote the songs, and Cheatham set them to music using instruments
far removed from those of western music, like the shakuhachi (the Japanese flute), the sarangi (a bowed instrument from India), or the shruti box (likewise of Indian origin).
