Pablo Maza Quartet

Pablo Maza, a saxophonist and composer from Navarre, completed his higher education at Musikene and later earned a master’s degree from the Lisbon Higher School of Music. His self-taught beginnings at a young age shaped a clear inclination toward improvisation, leading him to participate in projects focused on reggae, hip hop, and other genres, thereby forging an eclectic and flexible style. As a studio musician, Pablo Maza has collaborated on albums of various styles, recorded film soundtracks and contributed to projects such as Limbo in 2019 with the Limbo Ensemble, and Electric Yucca Yuccatown in 2010. Based in Bilbao since 2022, Pablo Maza is the founder of projects such as the No More Jazz Brass Band, Organ Freeman and Zozo. In addition to his numerous improvisational performances across various performing arts, for which he has received various awards, he is a member of the Broken Brothers Brass Band and leader of his own quartet. He balances this prolific career with his work as an educator, and it has led him to perform at the most prestigious festivals alongside projects such as Reunion Big Band, XVR Quintet, No More Jazz Brass Band, Beroa Quintet and the Mikel Legasa Quartet, among others. This has also established him as a significant figure in the Basque music scene.

Pablo Maza’s first album with his quartet is titled Iduzki Denean and features three extraordinary musicians. First is the highly experienced Cantabrian guitarist and bassist Nicolás Alvear, who leads his own project, the Nicolás Alvear Organ Trio, and collaborates with bands such as Lash Trío and OrgáNico Trío. Jorgito Sánchez, a Navarran double bassist with a long career in jazz, flamenco, and improvisation, has collaborated with artists such as Alana Sweetwater, Rihanon Miprano, and Peio Reparaz. Lastly, Eneko Arbea, a drummer and percussionist from Pamplona, has performed at festivals such as those in San Sebastián, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Getxo. He has also collaborated with artists including Miho Hazama, Andrzej Olejniczak, and Sean Clapis.

Iduzki Denean is the result of two years of development and extensive experimentation. An album with a distinct identity, full of contrasts, textures, and artistic intentions, where folk traditions coexists seamlessly with contemporary jazz and the most unorthodox and creative avant-garde.
