Unfading

July 18, 2023

Perpetual, imperishable… like the seductive impulse that supports and nourishes our musical passions and our love for jazz music. The one that pushes and stirs the constant search for surprise, for the spell of the unrepeatable moment, for the elusive beauty that emerges in a dazzling way when we least expect it. With devotion, perseverance, wisdom and immense talent, Javier López Jaso has been following that path for many years bringing the finest jazz jewels that can be heard around these parts. Often collaborating with Marcelo Escrich, also featured on this record, together they have recorded and released key works in our music scene such as “Aporía” and “Pagoda“.

Under the suggestive title of “Unfading” Javier now arrives with a new album recorded between September-December 2022 at Mecca Studios in Oiartzun, conceived as a journey surrounded by great musicians and friends, such as the previously mentioned Marcelo EscrichMikel Andueza and Dani Lizarraga, including original songs by Javier with some splendid and refined rhythms and melodies from Basque tradition and popular songs adaptations with mythological reminiscences.

Its performers don’t need further introductions. However, it never hurts to remember that Javier López Jaso is probably one of the most relevant accordion players in today’s music scene in constant research of new improvisational resources applied to accordion technique, having performed at Heineken Jazzaldia (San Sebastian Jazz Festival), Vitoria Jazz Festival, Ezcaray International Jazz Festival, Salamanca Jazz, Jazz at the UPNA (Navarra Public University), Mirajazz Festival and Jazzfermin, among others, in addition he has been awarded by Canal de Isabel II Foundation in Madrid for his work with his group “New Mood Trio”. On the other hand, Argentine double bass player Marcelo Escrich, has been living among us for many years and is a graduate at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra, obtaining a Master´s degree in Development of Musical Abilities and has participated in more than twenty albums: among them, “Fato” by the Italian trio “Noos”, “Proyecto Flamenco Contemporáneo Ensemble” by Miguel Ángel Remiro or “Lóra Blu” by Tony Germani. He has also led bands under his name as Marcelo Escrich Silent Trio. Drummer Daniel Lizarraga from Pamplona, who has collaborated with artists such as Robin Eubanks, Masa Kamaguchi, Bruce Saunders, Chris Kase, Federico Lechner. He´s a member of Broken Brothers Brass band and Kike Arza’s quartet Electric 4et among others. Outstanding sax player Mikel Andueza, with whom Javier has previously worked as a duo in “5 segunduoro”, he is undoubtedly one of our most relevant musicians, graduated with honors in Classical Saxophone by the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, Cum Laude Diploma and Performance Award in Saxophone Jazz by the Berklee College of Music (USA), He has recorded more than thirty albums and has  collaborated with artists such as Manhattan Transfer, Phill Woods, Randy Brecker, Kurt Elling, Deborah Brown, Dusko Goikowich, Tete Montoliu and unforgettable Pedro Iturralde.

As Marcelo recently stated, “The best music is the one that achieves what it honestly intends”. It is so true that “Unfading” with its elegant and vintage fusion between evocative accordion sound, modal jazz and suburban Tango fulfills completely, becaming one of the most sensitive and moving records published in recent years.
