The WYNNTOWN MARSHALS  (Pop-Rock / Edinburgh)

The Wynntown Marshals was formed in Edinburgh in 2007 and pays tribute to artists such as Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Jayhawks and Wilco. Since their formation, the band have supported a number of world-renowned Americana acts including Marty Stuart, Richmond Fontaine, Jason & The Scorchers, Tift Merritt, John Murry and in 2008 toured the UK supporting influential American singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet. Their sound can be loosely described as “country rock” with powerpop hooks, but they love layered guitars, catchy choruses and are firm believers in the power of rock music as a storytelling medium.

The Wynntown Marshals‘ latest offering was released in 2023. While the intervening years have brought line-up changes and pandemic delays, the group’s core influences of the Byrds and Bruce Springsteen remain in songs about oversharing on social media and thinking before speaking. Nostalgia, love and loss emerge as recurring themes, the Battle of Stalingrad from the German trench, the desire to start over, loneliness… with a West Coast feel and sounds reminiscent of Deacon Blue. Noteworthy are the Hammond organ sounds and the interplay of pedal steel and piano, with tinkling guitars and harmonica, a funky country introduction and folk developments.

On the release of their debut in 2010, The Wynntown Marshals were hailed as Europe’s best American-sounding band. Nothing suggests anything has changed 15 years later: The lyrics are never disposable, the subject matter is often dark. Repetitive yet uplifting melodies are channeled through jangly guitars and beautiful vocal harmonies, offset by gorgeous keyboard parts and driven by a rock-solid rhythm section. Once referred to as “the mid-tempo masters,” the band can also make powerful, comforting pop.

Keith Benzie – lead vocals, acoustic guitar
