Seven notes, seven moments, unpredictable colored strokes about to unfold on an immaculate canvas. Intervals of time that evolve, summoning the voice of the artist of yesteryear as a prelude to the master of today. Fragments of past time giving way to the uncertain, the extraordinary, the magic. brief and subtle sequences announcing what is to come.
Bobby Martinez designs his latest record called Primeros siete segundos (Seven First Seconds) in a sextet format, showing us again the cast of young and brilliant musicians that made up his previous 2023 album Te lo dije. Trumpeter, composer and arranger Carlos Rossi (Bob Sands Big band, Jerry Gonzalez Big band, Norman Hogue, Javier Colina), guitarist Nacho Fernandez (The Machetazo, Tactus Collective), double bass player Dario Guibert (The Machetazo) and drummer Cesar de Frias (Pedro Iturralde, Skytrain). Four musicians with Musikene´s common denominator, who, along with Bobby Martinez himself on tenor and soprano saxophone and Basque pianist and composer Iñigo Ruiz de Gordejuela, share the exciting spirit of the moment, halfway between old-time jazz tradition and contemporary Jazz.
First seven seconds is a fresh and well-paced record in which American saxophonist’s own aesthetic can be glimpsed from the beginning on compositions such as Esperando or on the effervescent Primeros siete segundos, written by Carlos Rossi, who also signs Lo que no te conté. Bobby Martinez pays tribute to his friend and late partner, Bob Sands, on delightful One for Bob. With an avant-garde character, Iñigo Ruiz de Gordejuela writes Unintended Consequences, with the outstanding contribution from Nacho Fernández on guitar, who in turn signs Charukesi, full of dynamics and passages open to improvisation. Buenos tardes, Señor Elefante spreads Bobby Martinez compositional magic, sharing space and time under the rhythmic pattern dictated by Dario Guibert and Cesar Frias, to delight us with the subtle elegance of Cool and Blue, ending up with Moebius daring dynamics written by Dario Guibert
First seven seconds evokes the voice of a musician from yesterday, now a sage. A subtle preamble to what is to come. The exact time to define the right space between silences. Ephemeral, small fragments of time develop, seven notes, seven moments just before the magic of the moment.
