Low Tide
Eric Surmenian, musician, painter, and multifaceted artist studied classical and jazz double bass at Conservatoire de Marseille, winner of the Grand Prix de Jazz in 1996 and cum laude at Conservatoire of Amsterdam. Over the years he has collaborated with artists such as Eric Barret, Antoine Lisolo, Olivier Ker Ourio, Serge Lazavitch, Diederik Wissels, Eric Vermeulen, Ernst Reijseger, Jasper Blom, David Berkman, Tom Rainey, and Toots Thielemans, among others.
Throughout his international career as a jazz double bassist, he has recorded more than 30 albums. He has also worked for television, film, and prestigious dance companies. His extensive discography also includes a number of trio recordings in which Surmenian is not only an excellent accompanist, but also a superb soloist.
In addition to his career as a jazz musician, he has experimented with various musical styles, from free jazz to free improvisation, including classical and Indian music, and has done an excellent job of exploring, expanding, and experimenting with double bass’s sonic spectrum. This allows him to sign here – without falling into total abstraction – a new and solo recording, in which double bass is magnified in an imaginary orchestra of pure beauty.
In this album, Surmenian presents eight solo double bass pieces that make up the Marée Basse – Itsas Behera– Low tide show, including texts from the libretto and a bonus track.
